This list covers the best of them - museums, parks, skyline views, outdoor concerts, iconic walks, and neighborhood gems. Every item is genuinely free. Free to walk year-round. Two and a half miles of wooden boardwalk along the Atlantic Ocean. The rides cost money but the beach, the boardwalk, the ocean air, and the general spectacle do not. Go in winter for a surreal experience.

A waterfront park built on the old Domino Sugar refinery site in Williamsburg. Preserved refinery artifacts, domino table installations, and East River views of Midtown Manhattan. One of the most thoughtfully designed parks in the city.

Brooklyn's oldest park on a hill in one of the borough's most beautiful neighborhoods. The Prison Ship Martyrs Monument honors 11,500 American prisoners who died on British ships during the Revolution. Great farmers market on Saturdays.

SummerFree Coney Island Beach
NYC's public beaches are free. Coney Island is the most famous - a real ocean beach at the end of the B, D, F, N, and Q trains. Free to swim, free to lie in the sun, no parking fee, no resort charge.

Free First SaturdaysBrooklyn Museum
Free the first Saturday of every month from 5 to 11pm. One of the largest art museums in the country, with an extraordinary Egyptian collection, a feminist art wing, and rotating major exhibitions. Live music and dancing included.

Free to enter. The Art Deco facade on Grand Army Plaza is one of the great pieces of architecture in Brooklyn. Free events, exhibitions, and programming year-round. The library card is free and gets you access to 60 branches.

A 35-acre complex of converted warehouses in Sunset Park. Free to walk through. Studios, galleries, food vendors, and makers. The Japan Village food hall is worth an hour. No ticket, no reservation - just walk in.

Spring–FallBrooklyn Botanic Garden – Free Select Times
Free on weekday mornings before noon from mid-January through March, and on select other days. The Cherry Esplanade in late April is one of the great free spectacles in NYC. Check their site for current free admission times.

Stand on Washington Street between Water and Front Streets. The Manhattan Bridge frames the Empire State Building perfectly through the arch. One of the most photographed views in New York. Free, always.

A half-mile elevated walkway with an unobstructed panoramic view of lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, and New York Harbor. Best at night when the skyline is lit. Free always.

The Red Hook waterfront has some of the most dramatic views of the Statue of Liberty anywhere - better than Battery Park and free. Valentino Pier at the end of Coffey Street is one of Brooklyn's great hidden spots.

A small waterfront park at the northern tip of Greenpoint with direct views of the Manhattan skyline. Quiet, local, and almost unknown to tourists. Best at sunset. Free always.

Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Cobblestone streets, converted warehouses, independent galleries, and two bridges framing the skyline from every angle. Walk it on a Sunday morning when it is quiet.

The oldest historic district in New York. Federal and Greek Revival townhouses on tree-lined streets that look almost exactly as they did 150 years ago. Walk Pierrepont, Remsen, and Joralemon. End on the Promenade.

The largest open-air street art museum in NYC, spanning dozens of blocks in Bushwick. World-class muralists have painted entire building facades here. Start at Troutman and Jefferson and just walk. New work appears constantly.

Two of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Streets lined with brownstones that look unchanged in 100 years. Tiffany Place and Kane Street are standouts. Walk them slowly and look at everything.

Free outdoor concerts all summer at the Prospect Park Bandshell. One of the longest-running free outdoor performing arts festivals in the country. Major artists, world music, dance, and film. Check the calendar in June.

JuneConey Island Mermaid Parade
Free to watch. The largest art parade in the United States, held every June. Thousands of elaborately costumed participants march down Surf Avenue. Completely free, completely weird, completely New York.

Free on Saturdays. One of the most important and least-visited sites in Brooklyn - a preserved community of free Black families from the 1800s. Four restored Hunterly Road Houses from the 1840s still stand on site.

The massive Soldiers and Sailors Arch at the entrance to Prospect Park is modeled on the Arc de Triomphe. The plaza - with its fountains, greenmarkets, and the view down Flatbush Avenue - is a great free orientation point for the whole neighborhood.

A free public waterway path along the Newtown Creek in Greenpoint. The Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant's giant silver digester eggs are a genuinely surreal landmark worth seeing.

Eastern Parkway is one of the first parkways ever built in America, designed by Olmsted and Vaux. The limestone rowhouses and grand stoops along Crown Heights streets are extraordinary. Walk from the Brooklyn Museum down through the neighborhood.

Reachable from Brooklyn on the A train. A real surfer beach with a boardwalk, free swimming, and a vibe completely unlike the rest of the city. The subway ride through Jamaica Bay is beautiful. Free all summer.

The commercial heart of Brooklyn has been transformed - new towers, a revived arts district, and one of the great pedestrian streets in the outer boroughs. The mix of old-school shopping and new development is a genuine New York experience.

Free sand volleyball courts at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Show up, find an open court, and play with a view of the harbor. Courts are first-come, first-served. The surrounding waterfront at Pier 6 is also one of the most pleasant spots in the park.
